An Italian Herb Garden

Italian cooking is one of the most influential cuisines in the entire world. It is undeniable that Italian cooking has integrated its way into nearly every home around the globe. What is the essential ingredient that spells the difference between great Italian food and mediocre Italian cooking? The secret to cooking exquisite Italian food is herbs.

This in truth may be a point of argument among cooks that would insist that it is the use of olive oil that would make it truly taste better. Let us take this into a test. Make a tomato sauce for spaghetti and use only olive oil and other ingredients without herbs. Make another batch of tomato sauce using vegetable oil and add in a little basil. Taste the difference and it will prove that a less than a teaspoon full of an herb will bring about a new dimension of flavor.

The one distinct thing about the way that Italians cook is that the ingredients that they use are what are profusely available in the region where they live. The Italians are practical cooks and have properly plan their daily fare with the use of low cost ingredients. For example, the ingredients that you would need to make pasta are basically the same kind of ingredients that are used in making bread sticks which are flour, oil and eggs. Then the sauce for the pasta is can be made with oil and herbs and the breadstick is can also be sprinkled with herbs.

To grow an Italian herb garden there are key herbs that must be included. The herb basil is the most often used herb in Italian cooking. It is one of the two main ingredients in pesto, used as a topping for pizza, and added to many other dishes. The next ingredient that takes a vital role in is parsley. This herb is chopped and sprinkle in a lot of preparations including main dishes and in bread. Another herb ingredient that the Italians cannot do without to be use in slow cooking dishes is the bay leaf.
And what would an Italian herb garden be without garlic, bell peppers, onions and chili peppers? A lot of dishes are presented using these herbs as the main ingredient. There are a lot of meatless pastas and pizzas that use these simple herbs as their main ingredient and the colors that it adds to the dish make it more scrumptious looking.

There are many other herbs that play a role in Italian cuisine. Why not take the time to try and grow them in and around your home? The herbs that Italians frequently use are easy to grow and can be stored for future use. If you grow your own Italian Herb Garden there is a whole variety of dishes that you can make at a low expense.
